Nothing helps us move on to the next year like re-capping the last. With 2010 waning, the time has come for some year-in-review reflection videos by YouTube users, from the best in video games to a re-cap of the Supreme Court's biggest cases. Tech gurus are covering highlights in the mobile, gadget and robot industries, fashionistas are naming their favorite beauty products of 2010, and self-proclaimed "music nerds" like theneedledrop are going through their favorite albums of the year:
Active news and political vlogger, DavisFleetwood, ran through the top 10 news stories of the year.
And if you're looking for a more fun way to reminisce about 2010, TheFineBros put together this creative, interactive shooting range video/game.

In the lead-up to the holidays, we shared 12 days of top 10 lists from 2010 covering a slew of genres and categories. Today, we've got one more interesting one.
We dug through our data to pull out the top 10 Most Shared videos of the year. These are the videos from the past year that had the most views from social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Each of the top 10 had at least 1.5 million views via sharing platorms. Interestingly, a significant portion came from the latter part of the calendar, and YouTube's biggest lip-sync star this Fall, teenager Keenan Cahill, makes more than one appearance.

officially launched YouTube Trends to the world. And each day since, we've been sharing lists of the top trends and videos from the year that was, spanning nearly every major genre and category in online video.
Here's a quick recap of the many top 10 lists we put out showing 2010's best and most popular...

For the final list in our 12-day holiday countdown, we've gone through all the holiday videos featured on YouTube Trends this month and pulled together a list of the Most Viewed holiday clips.
The biggest hit of the holiday season was the Hallelujah flash mob performance in a mall food court in Ontario, Canada. The holiday flash mob phenomenon was maybe the biggest and most widespread video trend of the season as well.
Though they didn't make the list we also saw: Some great SantaCon videos from San Francisco and New York. Santa bust a move, leak his naughty list, and rappel from an air force helicopter. Holiday mashups, zombies, camels falling, beer bottle carols, and dogs with hands. And got Christmas wishes from Alaska, New Zealand and even space. (And don't forget this dark, funny short from eastern Europe.)

We've spent a lot of time throughout our 12-day holiday countdown looking at videos that were extremely popular in the U.S. or in the U.S. and the rest of the world. But what about the videos that were big around the world, but weren't big in the United States?
Using video data from each country, we isolated 10 music videos that made other most-viewed-of-the-year lists outside of the United States. There were a lot of great and very popular videos that didn't make it, but here's what we came up with:

YouTube's "People and Blogs" category has been something of a grabbag/catchall and our 2010 list of the top 10 "person" videos from that genre certainly lives up to the reputation as we continue our 12-day (Trendsmas?) holiday countdown.
The top spot went to, perhaps unsurprisingly, Old Spice's "the man your man could smell like," followed by "Double Rainbow," both of which were among the year's most viewed. After that, things get interesting, and you can find everything from a baby playing the drums to an angry redhead. Check out our full list:

Our countdown to the holidays rolls on as we continue to look back at the top videos from 2010 in different genres and categories. Today, we examine the top 10 short films of 2010.
We organized this list from the most viewed and most favorited short film videos of 2010 in our Film and Animation category, and we certainly came across a pretty wide-ranging group of quirky productions. This list has everything from cows to poetry to LEGOs. One of the most popular short filmmakers of the year was YouTuber MysteryGuitarMan, whose inventive editing and cinematography drew him a big following in 2010. His popular vuvuzela video is included below.

YouTube's 12 days of top 10 lists continues today with our list of the top 10 videos that inspired the most comments over the course of the year. We know what people watched the most, but we thought it would be interesting to see what videos inspired the most feedback and conversation in 2010.*
The two videos covering major news topics that made the list concerned the contentions issues of the Ground Zero Mosque and Wikileaks. The video to deliver the most feedback was the now famous angry rant about red-heads from CopperCab. Other interesting additions were YouTuber Ryan Higa, who regularly solicited questions from his viewers, and two of our most popular videos of the year: "Bed Intruder" and "Double Rainbow."

So we've looked at the top 10 videos in sports, news, trailers, parody, non-profit, hip-hop, tech culture, and vehicles as we continue our countdown to Christmas. So today, we look at the top 10 family-friendly pet and animal videos of the year in the U.S.
Though this list only contains videos of real-life pets and animals, by far the most popular animated cat was "Simon's Cat," created by Simon Tofield. Tofield's shorts -- such as "The Box," "Snow Business," and "Santa Claws" -- drew a whopping 51 million views in 2010.
Other memorable pets that just missed our list include Inception Cat, DJ Kitty, OMG Cat, and, of course, Salsa Dog. And though it appeared in our "comedy" category rather than our "pets and animals" one, these two cats playing patty-cake also made a splash.

Our 12 days of trends got off to a blazing fast start already but we're going to pick up the pace even more today with an adrenaline-fueled list of the top 10 Auto and Vehicle videos of 2010.
While this list starts off with an amazing array of jaw-dropping, heart-pounding, fast-driving and quick-turning (featured on the top 10 videos of 2010), it quickly swerves to show more non-traditional car videos (to say the least).
This list doesn't cease to surprise, from a family rapping about their swagger wagon to soulful hamsters rapping about Kia, the top 10 vehicles certainly keeps it interesting. There's a reason this is the top 10 videos about vehicles and not 'Cars' as Honda's amazing personal mobility prototype device, a cardboard tank, and a youngin' on a trike grace the list as well.

Our 12 days of trends continues with today's chart of the most viewed Hip-Hop videos of 2010. These are the videos for Hip-Hop songs that got the most views around the world over the course of the year.
Three artists have two videos on the list: Eminem, B.o.B., and Drake. What might jump out at you most is just how many views Eminem's videos, which make up the top two, drew this year compared to other videos in the genre, the data shows that while all these videos were popular in the US and in other countries, Eminem's videos this year were massively popular globally in a way that few music videos on the web have ever been.
Kanye West, whose "Power" drew millions of views in the past few months, may not have made the list but he did engineer one of the biggest web moments in the genre this year, releasing a 34 minute film on YouTube titled, "Runaway." Also just missing the list was Cali Swag District's "Teach Me How to Dougie," which pushed the "Dougie" dance video trend to the mainstream. Here's the full list:

From Shakira's hypnotic dance video supporting global education to a plastic bag parody narrated by Jeremy Irons, many of the top social change videos this year were made to inform and entertain.
In January, the YouTube community rallied as a devastating earthquake took hundreds of thousands of lives in Haiti. The American Red Cross was one of the first organizations to mobilize on YouTube, attracting millions of views of this video within the first 48 hours of the disaster. In the following weeks, dozens of celebrities banded together to re-create “We Are the World” and raise millions of dollars for afflicted Haitians.
Later in the year, citizens used YouTube to take a strong stand for LGBT rights. Lady Gaga's impassioned message to the Senate about "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," a flash-mob video lambasting Target for their donations to anti-gay candidates, and Dan Savage's vlog that launched the “It Gets Better” movement against gay bullying, all cracked the Top 10. In day three of our 12-day exploration of 2010's biggest trends on YouTube, we have a list of the United States' top 10 most memorable (and most popular) technology culture clips of 2010.
Overall, the introduction of new offerings from Apple, Google, and Twitter were incredibly popular in the tech space this year. Odd at-home creations and experiments were also popular. Our list has a little bit of everything, but starts with an orange and ends with a syrupy explosion.

Continuing our 12 days of 2010 reflection, today we look at the top 10 parody videos over the course of this year.
2010 was definitely the year of the pop-song parody with Barely Political's Key of Awe$ome "Tik Tok" parody finishing the year as the second-most watched YouTube video 2010. Other top parody videos of the year included those produced by YouTubers Shane Dawson, Venetian Princess, Alex Negrete, and Josh Thecomputernerd01.
The surprise parody hit of the year was this performance of Gaga's "Telephone" all the way from Afghanistan, coming in at #10.

From the emergence of Wikileaks to the rise of the Tea Party, 2010 has been a year in which the centers of power were called into question; and many took to YouTube to share their stories and opinions with the world.
The top News and Politics videos of the year address hot-button issues like the controversial Arizona immigration legislation and the proposed mosque at Ground Zero; the list also covers some of the year’s most shocking events, such as the deaths of the luger at the Vancouver Olympics and the orca trainer at Sea World. Videos about airport security, Justin Bieber, and a congressman caught on camera all made the list, too.
Honorable Mentions: though these videos didn't make the top 10, an eyewitness video shot in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake in January garnered millions of views, as did an explainer of how the BP oil spill occurred and Dale Peterson's impassioned political ad, the most-watched campaign commercial of the 2010 election season.

As movie trailers go, 2010 was dominated on YouTube by two fantasy films, including the Twilight franchise's third film Twilight: Eclipse. The top viewed trailers for that film combined for over 30 million worldwide views this year. "Eclipse trailer" was also the top rising search on YouTube for March of this year. You can see the other top search terms here.
Below, you can find the most viewed trailers in the US. Interestingly, some of the films -- like Clash of the Titans and The Virginity Hit -- received nearly all of their views from the US, while others -- like The Expendables -- saw the bulk of their views come worldwide.

Below you can check out how things shook out in terms of global views. Perhaps the biggest difference on the list is the appearance of the trailer for Step Up 3D, which drew 8.03 million of its 9.23 million total views from outside the United States, predominantly in South and Southeast Asia. Thanks to a late run, the most recent installment in the Harry Potter series moved into the top spot globally ahead of Twilight.
The global list also contains a trailer for a movie that was never made...
On YouTube, the last 12 months in sports brought everything from small-town plays to major global sporting events, and we watched as the videos below exploded in popularity in the United States.
The bell-weather sporting event of the year was undoubtedly the World Cup in South Africa, where Spain finally lived up to their promise, football (aka soccer) aficionados worldwide were treated to a spectacularly speculative take on the game and its consequences in a series of ads by Nike, and American fans everywhere delighted in a last-minute, game-saving goal by Landon Donovan.
While the pros get their share of love on our site, amateur athletes got their chance to shine, too, whether it was must-be-seen-to-be-believed plays in football, soccer and baseball and basketball. In the category of "Awesomely Miscellaneous/Miscellaneously Awesome," trick shot artists reached new heights, while underwater base jumper Guillaume Nery reached, well, new depths. And while we're unclear on what exactly it is that these guys do, we still say: well played.
