Look at Them Now: Karmin's Hip-Hop Cover Songs Go Big

April 28, 2011

One of the most shared videos this month is a YouTube performance by the band Karmin. The duo's cover of "Look At Me Now" by Chris Brown ft. Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes has been viewed nearly seven million times since it was first trending on April 14th.

The video was tweeted by Questlove and Chamillionaire as well as Ellen DeGeneres, who later had them as guests on her show.

Karmin, made up of Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan, has been posting videos since last fall. Until early this month, Karmin's most popular videos were covers of Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, respectively. But none of those featured Amy's channeling of Busta Rhymes. It seems that hip-hop has been working well for the pair as their take on Lil Wayne's "6 Foot 7 Foot" has drawn half a million views in roughly 24 hours and is now also appearing on our Most Shared list alongside the original.

To what extent did that discovery boost their audience? The chart below shows viewership in the past few months:

Three Little Girls You Wouldn't Want to Mess With

April 26, 2011

Lately, we've seen an interesting "trend" develop with three separate videos drawing blogger attention in the past few weeks that each feature tough young ladies performing some cool -- and very unusual -- physical feats.

There's no true link between the videos themselves, the sole connection -- aside from the obvious one -- seemings to be our own fascination with their unusual, gender-stereotype-defying interests and abilities. Take a look:
Monique Sciberras is a 10-year-old Muay Thai kickboxer from Australia whose parents introduced her to the sport to help overcome her autism. Various versions of this training session video were picked up across the web in the past week.
9-year-old Naomi Kutin from New Jersey weighs only 88 lbs, but can squat 187 as demonstrated by this video, which has been viewed over 200,000 times this month.
There's less information about this clip other than that the young sword wielder was filmed at a Japanese workshop last May. It's one of two Japanese videos featuring female sword experts trending this week.

Rising Search: 'Phoebe Snow'

Earth Day + Friday =

April 22, 2011

There is a long tradition of Earth Day-related songs popping up around the environmental holiday (example: Biz Markie's Earth Day Remix), but this year, that tradition has gone in a whole new direction.

Due to an incredible alignment of the holiday, the day-of-week, the moment-in-viral-history, and the appropriate number of syllables, the universe has brought us a new trend: Rebecca Black "Earth Day" parody videos.

That's right. It seems some YouTube users -- mostly students and teachers -- have taken to putting together some cheesy, tongue-in-cheek remakes of Ms. Black's viral hit to celebrate today, Earth Day, which also happens to be Friday. Here are a few examples, which vary widely both technically and lyrically...
