Big in Tunisia: Ben Ali Poster

October 19, 2011

The most-viewed video today in Tunisia and the most-shared in both Tunisia and Egypt is this political "PSA" that was posted by a the account EngagementCitoyen. In it, a giant poster of former Tunisian President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali is seen hung on a wall to the incredulous looks of passerby, reportedly in Tunis. Ben Ali was sentenced to jail in absentia after fleeing to Saudi Arabia during that countries famous uprising earlier in the year.

The crowd becomes gradually more irate until they tear it off the wall, revealing a special public service message...

More background is here in French. The ad is said to have been created by Memac Ogilvy in Tunis.

This kind of "guerilla" political video messaging is certainly not uncommon in the United States and it now appears to be spreading to North Africa following the revolutions in 2011.
