What They're Watching: California on Dating

July 05, 2011

This post was authored by Michelle Castillo as a part of a YouTube Trends series exploring the videos being watched this week by the team at What's Trending.

As your non-native native resident Californian on the What’s Trending crew – as in I was born in some other state called Maryland but lived most of my live in the Golden State – I personally love this video that shows what Californians are like when it comes to the dating game.

I no longer call sunny southern California my home, but I have lots of love for the people, places and peculiar scenes that can only happen there. Here are some memorable songs and music videos that honor the state.

One of the newest songs to honor California is Rihanna’s “California King Bed.” Okay, it’s really about a mattress, but we can accept it as a worthy tribute. Californians just make better lovers.

“Californication” showed the shady side of California and how life there is really just one big game. It also showed that people from California are just plain weird.

Yes, the grass is really greener in California, and our streets and trees are made of lollipops and cotton candy. When we walk down the street singing a sweet pop song to ourselves, Snoop Dogg pops out from nowhere and starts rapping along.

Perhaps the best musical representation of California is “California” by Phantom Planet. In case you were wondering, everyone acts exactly like you saw in “The O.C.” No lie.
