Charlie Sheen 'Winning' YouTube

March 08, 2011

He's a #1 topic on Google News and "Charlie Sheen" is the top overall rising search of the past 30 days, even besting "Born This Way," the Lady Gaga single that's also produced a popular video and cover.

But through interviews that have been viewed upwards of 5 million times, he's also coined some viral terminology that's making its way across popular web culture. Take a look at this U.S. search interest graph dating back to 2008:

But the "winning" trend is not limited to searches*. "Charlie Sheen Winning" remains one of YouTube's top Trending Topics, and use of the term "winning" has been trending across just about every metric we have. Specifically, we're seeing a glut of music parodies, three (three!) of which are appearing on today's Most Shared videos list alone:

This dubstep remix was posted March 2nd and has been viewed over 2 million times. And this parody posted on the 5th has been viewed over 200,000 times.

Now, YouTube's best known auto-tune musicians, the Gregory Brothers, have released their own remix, which is quickly drawing views:

Here's a playlist of some of the songs we've seen popping up including this live jam, which was one of last week's featured 4 @ 4 videos.

(* If you're curious about the search spikes in May of 2009 and June of 20010, this LeBron James game-"winning" shot and this event might, respectively, be the likely cuplrits.)

Charlie Sheen Reaction: Rants, Animation, & Song

February 28, 2011

Actor Charlie Sheen has dominated celebrity headlines of late, culminating with producers' decision to halt production on CBS' "Two and a Half Men" and series of rants/interviews drawing public attention.

The first part of Sheen's interview with Alex Jones of InfoWars has been viewed over 200,000 times since it was posted on Friday. Today, Sheen's interview on "Good Morning America" is now also drawing attention.

A search for "Charlie Sheen" videos on YouTube will deliver over 1,400 results from just the past week. While you'll find a celebrity and news reports around the actor, you'll also find some interesting reactions from the YouTube community.

Some are more elaborate, like this take NMAWorldEdition, the popular CGI animators from Taiwan that have built a global following:

Slate also produced an Xtranormal video using a transcript of Sheen's comments.

Other videos are from YouTube users directly weighing in on the recent outbursts in various forms. Here's a playlists with eight clips from the past few days (some strong language):

'Family Feud' Awkwardness 'Gets Passed Around'

February 14, 2011

Comedian Steve Harvey took over "Family Feud" hosting duty in September and the show has been uploading its funniest -- and most awkward -- moments to YouTube since, producing viral hits in October and November, with this Fast Money answer (1.1M views) and this survey response (1.3M), respectively.

But a new clip posted earlier this month, a response to the survey prompt "Name something that gets passed around," picked up over 4 and a half million views last week. It's also topped our Most Shared list since Friday, and has been showing regional popularity around the countryon our Trends Dashboard, making it the show's biggest YouTube success of the season and one of the most-viewed entertainment clips of the past month.

The video has drawn a lot of social media attention on Facebook, Twitter, and social bookmarking sites and is most popular with the 35-54 age group, similar to many other "Family Feud" clips, but has also seen appeal among younger age groups. As you can see in the chart below, the video shot up in views late last week and hit a peak of over one million viewers on last Friday alone.

(You're welcome for not including a single "Survey Says" remark in this entire post.)

Which 'Jersey Shore' Star is Most Popular on YouTube?

January 13, 2011

The third season of MTV's "Jersey Shore" kicked off last week and we're seeing a big bump in interest for videos related to the show's cast. So who is the most popular?

While interviews with and parodies of all the cast members are all over the site, Snooki, Pauly D, and Vinny G each also have popular YouTube channels of their own that have drawn over 23 million views combined.

Pauly D has the most views of the bunch with 14.6 million, 3.8 million of which coming from the "No Americano" clip above. SnookTV has almost 8 million views and has recently helped stir up a feud with "View" host Joy Behar. Vinny is just about to top 1 million, but his recent "Black and Guido" video has been among the most-shared clips for days now.

But if we go by YouTube search interest in the show's stars, Snooki's the clear winner. The graph below compares the terms "snooki" (blue), "the situation" (yellow), "pauly D" (red), "jwoww" (green), "sammi" (purple). We left out "vinny" and "ronnie," because those those terms are tied to too many unrelated subjects. As you can see, all five have seen a big spike in 2011 as the new season has kicked off:

More fun facts: while overall searches are definitely concentrated in the Northeast, searches for Snooki are most popular in, unsurprisingly, New Jersey, but searches for Pauly D are most popular in his home state: Rhode Island.
