'Wake Up, It's the First of the Month'

February 01, 2011

We noticed this morning that one of the today's spiking search terms on YouTube was "first of the month bone thugs n harmony," which was confusing for a second, but then -- oh yeah -- today is, in fact, February 1st.

That got us curious/confused. So we dug into the recent video stats for that particular, seemingly-forgotten 1995 Bone Thugs jam, and this is what we found:

Yes. It's true. The video gets a huge boost in views every 30 days... on the first of the month.

Taiwan's Biggest Dance Craze: Bobee

January 19, 2011

It seems we might just have come across the makings of a Taiwanese "Single Ladies." A popular song (and music video) by singer Lotus Wang called "Bobee" has inspired a high number of homemade and creative remakes by fans in Taiwan. Here's the original video, which has been viewed 1.2 million times since the beginning of December:

The song, which is actually a cover of a South Korean song, has reportedly been a chart-topper and it's also inspired a dance phenomenon. Some users say they're posting their videos for an organized contest, while others seem to just be having some fun.

Here's a playlist of all kinds of these dances performed by small children, students, and even a wedding party. The first clip is one of Taiwan's Most Viewed videos today.

Australia's Justin Bieber Lookalike

January 05, 2011

Jamie Laou, a 17-year-old from Sydney who happens to look like a certain popstar, is drawing a lot of attention this week as multiple blogs have posted stories about him. Laou's using his YouTube channel, Uncompelable, to take advantage of the resemblance with a series of silly clips he's posted and an accompanying Twitter account.

Here's one of his popular videos (which contains some adult humor):

As you can see, Laou's channel is currently seeing a big spike and some of his videos have drawn over 100,000 views so far, with the largest demographic being, shockingly, girls between 13-17.

The result: a slew of Laou fan videos have hit YouTube from his new supporters. We've collected a bunch in this playlist:

(Use the arrows to navigate between videos or watch them all here)

Laou's success shouldn't be too surprising. Justin Bieber was one of the most searched people in Australia (and the U.S.) in 2010.

How Keenan Cahill Became a Lip-Sync Star

December 29, 2010

Yesterday, we posted our list of the 10 Most Shared videos of 2010. Topping that list was a lip-synced performance of Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream," delivered by then-rising YouTube star Keenan Cahill.

Cahill, a high school sophomore with a rare disorder, had been posting videos of himself singing and lip-syncing pop songs since last October with some notice. But it wasn't until his version of "Teenage Dream" -- which has been viewed over 24 million times, was acknowledged by Katy Perry herself, and became one of our most heavily shared videos -- that Cahill began to take off and started averaging millions of views per week.

Between last October and this August, Cahill's videos were viewed 2.6 million times, which may seem like a lot. But compare that to the 125.7 million views he's drawn since. In addition to creating several popular new lip-syncs, Cahill has also done cameo videos with 50 Cent and WGN's morning show team.

As you can see in this chart showing views from this Fall, that 50 Cent cameo created a big spike for Cahill in November (mouse over the dots for more info):

Top Hip-Hop Videos of 2010

December 17, 2010

Our 12 days of trends continues with today's chart of the most viewed Hip-Hop videos of 2010. These are the videos for Hip-Hop songs that got the most views around the world over the course of the year.

Three artists have two videos on the list: Eminem, B.o.B., and Drake. What might jump out at you most is just how many views Eminem's videos, which make up the top two, drew this year compared to other videos in the genre, the data shows that while all these videos were popular in the US and in other countries, Eminem's videos this year were massively popular globally in a way that few music videos on the web have ever been.

Kanye West, whose "Power" drew millions of views in the past few months, may not have made the list but he did engineer one of the biggest web moments in the genre this year, releasing a 34 minute film on YouTube titled, "Runaway." Also just missing the list was Cali Swag District's "Teach Me How to Dougie," which pushed the "Dougie" dance video trend to the mainstream. Here's the full list:

How Justin Bieber's 'Baby' Became 2010's Most-Watched Music Video

December 14, 2010

Justin Bieber joined Lady Gaga this November as the only other artist to surpass one billion views on their YouTube channel. A big part of that was his song, "Baby," which was posted in February and was the most watched music video on YouTube this year.

It's also currently the most-viewed music video of all-time.

Unlike most other really popular music videos which see a big spike when first released, "Baby" has held a large, steady audience every month since it was posted. Here's a breakdown of monthly averages, including views all over the world:

But there's also something else that was pretty different about how this video gets viewed...
